She started her business – Tips by Maureen – after realizing that traditional nail services didn’t fit her day-to-day lifestyle. So she started making custom nail sets that not only boost your confidence but are also easy to apply and remove.
Based in the countryside near Morpeth, Ontario, Maureen is a hair extensionist and nail designer whose passion is helping people feel confident and beautiful.
She starts designing a custom set by learning more about the client’s style and reason for wanting beautiful nails.
Sometimes, clients look to her for inspiration. That’s when she starts to help them figure out what colours, designs, shapes, and patterns bring them joy.
With a bit of inspiration and conversation she can make anyone’s nail dreams come to life.
Tips by Maureen started when she was waiting for several weeks to get a salon appointment. Still wanting salon-quality nails, she started making her own and realized that there was a niche for nails that are beautifully designed but also easy to work with, on your own time.
“It all started when I went out and bought a nail kit, some gel, and some polish. But I was never creative. I couldn’t paint or draw. But for some reason, once I had a nail and a tiny little brush in my hand, I was able to paint cute little designs,” she says.
After learning about a client’s needs, Maureen starts painting little designs that are unique to each nail. This means you could be wearing 10 different designs all at once!
She can design nails for every day wear and for special occasions.
“I have a client who loves bold and bright, eccentric colours and I love designing for her. But one time she mentioned that she was going to a wedding and wasn’t sure how to style herself for it. But what she did know is that she couldn’t wear neon nails to it. So I made her these beautiful rose gold French tip nails and it transformed the way she carried herself that day,” Maureen says.
It’s the people part of the process that she enjoys most – seeing clients step into their confidence after getting a fresh new set of nails designed just for them.
“It’s about making people feel their absolute best. I’ve had hair clients cry and hug me after their appointments. You wouldn’t think that something like changing your hair or nails would have that big of an emotional impact but giving someone their confidence back is so fulfilling. I notice that when they’re wearing their new nails, they start talking with their hands more,” she explains.
Whether you prefer acrylic, gel, stick on, press-on, or traditional nail polish, Maureen says her press-on nails have a number of benefits to fit certain lifestyles.
“They’re reusable, you can swap them out any time, they’re strong, and durable. If one falls off, you can easily put it back on. And if you lose one, I can whip up a new one in no time,” she explains.
Have a custom design in mind? She’s always ready for a challenge.
“My favourite thing is when someone comes to me with a crazy design request that really gets me out of my comfort zone. They may not even have an inspiration photo, just a description. I love the challenge of working to bring their idea to life. But even though they’ve trusted me with the design, I still get nervous showing them the end result,” she says.
She enjoys being able to take her time, perfecting each design and ensuring it’s what the client had in mind.
“The time spent designing the nails is my own time meaning that the client doesn’t have to sit in a chair while I’m doing it. This also means I can take my time perfecting each nail,” she says.
