The Fable of The Christmas Spider (Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia)

This folklore tale is pretty specific to Eastern European and Scandinavian heritage but because of the internet it's been making the rounds! The fable not only teaches us the value in noticing, believing and faith but it also teaches us about how the little critters of our lives rarely get the credit they deserve. Once upon a table, a poor widow lived with her children in a tiny hut. They noticed a pinecone had fallen and taken root in their earthen hut floor and they watched excitedly all year as the tree sprouted to a proud evergreen. This family was poor, and sadly could not afford to decorate the tree for Christmas let alone buy presents to place under it. Accepting the disappointment of no sparkly tree and no presents the children retire to bed. The house spider, even after enduring countless broom whacks from the widow who feared the spider, feels terrible for the family and wants to help. She spends her evening spinning webs on the tree, hoping to catch Santa's attention to bring the children gifts. Her plan worked and Santa arrived, seeing the spiders hard work he uses his magic to turn the webs to silver. Thus, tinsel is born! The children awake to a happily ever after with presents, unbeknownst that it was all to do with their loving house spider. We hang a Christmas Spider on our tree to honour the original one from the tale. There are more variations of this story, but this is the most commonly told.
